Abstract

In the paper, the effects of sidecar on the Korean stock market are considered. Throughout the study, we could reach the following conclusions. Firstly, the analysis of return dynamics illustrates that there are no price reversals for all sample groups but price continuations after the event. Secondly, the analysis of volatility and liquidity shows that there are some differences in the effects of sidecar on market volatility and liquidity according to the sample periods‘ however, in the post period of widening of the sidecar trigger levels, the mechanism couldn’t play any role of stabilizing the market volatility and resolving the increased order imbalance around the event. From these results, we could infer that sidecar delays the normal price discovery process and undermine the market liquidity. Also, we suggest that the increased market efficiency of Korea stock market after the financial crisis in 1997, especially deregulation in securities markets, can be a good additional factor for explaining the diffrences in the role of sidecar between sample periods.

Abstract

This paper empirically examines the statistical properties of realized volatility and the relationships between volatility and correlation measurements of realized volatility by using intraday high-frequency foreign exchange (FX) rates. Results regarding the distributional and dynamic properties of realized volatility are in agreement with the findings of previous studies. However, the positive correlation present in previous studies is not found in the case of JPY. On trading days with low volatility in the FX market, realized correlation coefficients between JPY and other currencies have positive values, while realized correlation coefficients on trading days with high volatility show negative values. These results are due to the Japanese government's intervention in the FX market, particularly during trading days with high volatility. In this regard, our results suggest that the positive relationships between volatility and correlations verified in previous studies are not a general phenomenon in the case of government intervention and government intervention may distort the efficiency of the FX market. In addition, we show that the multivariate measurement of realized volatility based on intraday high-frequency data can be a useful tool for determining the occurrence of external intervention in the FX market.

Abstract

Despite a hangover from the worldwide economic crisis, international trade rebounded nicely with a record-level growth in late 2010. A sharp rise in international trade has sparked the international traffic growth. A majority of this traffic growth originated from maritime logistics which could move cargoes in large volume and at cheaper freight costs. Due to its cost-efficiency and easy access, maritime logistics typically accounts for more than half of the worldwide freight volume. However, maritime logistics poses a greater supply chain risk, since ocean carriers used for maritime logistics are more vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions, piracy attacks, terrorist hijacking, and cargo damages on the open sea than any other modes of transportation. Also, given the vast areas that maritime logistics covers, it is more difficult to protect maritime logistics activities from potential hazards and threats.

To better protect maritime logistics activities from potential security lapses, this chapter introduces and develops a variety of systematic security measures and tools that were successfully used by best-in-class companies and government entities across the world. Also, this chapter proposes a total maritime security management model as a way to formulate maritime risk mitigation strategies. To elaborate, this chapter sheds light on the roots of maritime security measures and tools, the ways that those measures and tools are best utilized, the roles of advanced information technology in maritime security from the global supply chain perspectives, the visualization and identification of potential maritime and its related supply chain risks, and policy guidelines that will help enhance maritime security.

Abstract

The Hanbo (meaning Korean treasure) scandal or “Hanbogate” occurred on January 23, 1997, with the bankruptcy of Hanbo Iron and Steel Company, the second largest steel company and 14th largest conglomerate in South Korea, as its debt had accumulated to US$5.6 billion. Hanbo's bankruptcy triggered an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office that resulted in the imprisonment for 15 years of Hanbo's founder, Chung Tae-Soo, for bribing politicians and bankers to pressure banks to extend hugh bank loans to Hanbo. Nine other persons were also convicted including Chung's son, who was jailed for three years for bribery and embezzlement, and Kim Hyun-Chol, the second son of President Kim Young-Sam, who was sentenced to three years jail and fined US$1.5 million (New York Times, 1997).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of empowering leadership on employees’ psychological well-being (PWB) and job engagement. This study also examines the mediating role of psychological capital (PsyCap) in these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The study draws on survey data (n=285) from employees in eight large-sized firms in South Korea. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine the convergent validity of the construct measures. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate the fit of the hypothesized model to the data.

Findings

The authors found that empowering leadership influenced job engagement both directly and indirectly through PsyCap. Employees’ PsyCap fully mediated the relationship between empowering leadership and employees’ PWB, while partially mediating the relationship between empowering leadership and job engagement.

Originality/value

This is the first empirical study to examine the effects of empowering leadership behaviors of leaders on both PWB and PsyCap, which are positive psychological resources of employees. The study has also provided empirical evidence for the importance of PsyCap, which plays a positive role in the ability of employees to manage their overall feelings in achievement situations and in employees’ engagement in the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of leaders' managerial coaching on followers' organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), creativity and task performance. This study also examined the mediating role of intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy, recognizing the follower’s attitude and cognition as essential elements of behavioral changes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected data from 20 companies across multiple industries in South Korea, and a total of 386 leader–follower dyads' data were used.

Findings

The results show that leaders' coaching is positively associated with OCB directly, but a direct impact of coaching on creativity and task performance was not supported. The results also showed that intrinsic motivation partially mediates the effect of coaching on OCB and fully mediates the effect of coaching on creativity and task performance. Self-efficacy played a role as a full mediator between coaching and task performance.

Originality/value

This study considered both the cognitive and affective aspects of managerial coaching and examined the influence of managerial coaching on the followers' in-role and extra-role behaviors (i.e. OCB, creativity and task performance) using responses from both the leaders and the followers at multiple organizations. Specifically, the results of this study empirically illustrated that managerial coaching by leaders serves as a mechanism mediated through intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy, linking to employees' OCB, creativity and task performance. This provides a clear explanation of the processes through which managerial coaching impacts employees and offers insights into the specific aspects that organizational leaders should focus on when engaging in managerial coaching.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine employees' perceived influence of the learning organization culture and learning goal orientation on their knowledge sharing attitude and intention across multiple industries. In connecting these concepts, the researchers incorporated theories of the knowledge-based firm, goal orientation and reasoned action.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was used to collect data from a total of 323 responses from eight South Korean organizations to examine the influence of organizational and individual learning factors on employees' knowledge sharing. Structural equation modeling showed that the proposed research model was supported by item internal consistency and model-fits.

Findings

Results indicated that employees' learning goal orientation, knowledge sharing attitude and learning organization culture positively influence employees' knowledge sharing intention. This study highlights that those employees are more likely to share knowledge when employees with high learning goal orientation form a positive attitude toward knowledge sharing in a learning supportive culture and structure.

Originality/value

This study added to the literature of learning organizations by identifying a strong positive connection between the learning organization culture and employees' knowledge sharing. The theoretical contribution of this study lies in which the important roles were extended that the learning goal orientation exerts on employee behaviors when they perceive the organization valuing learning.
